Joe Bass is the Charles F. Kettering Professor of Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The major focus of his group is on the integration of brain circuits coordinating fasting-feeding/sleep-wake cycles with bioenergetics and glucose homeostasis. Their work has led to discovery that clock ablation leads to beta cell failure. In addition, his group has established a role of nutrient in clock programming, uncovering interconnections between the circadian transcription cycle, NAD+ metabolism, and mitochondrial function. The Bass lab combines cell and biochemical approaches with behavioral analyses to elucidate the interrelationship between circadian disorders and metabolic disease.
